Tech Reflection - Mr Grundy

LI: To create a joint between two pieces of wood.

Today for tech, the year 8s continued to create the joint between to pieces of wood. We worked with Mr Grundy at Tamaki College.

First we we handed our pieces of paper that had our designs on it as well as the wood we will be using to create our toys or gifts. Then began to to saw out the two piece we need so we can make the joint. After cutting the two pieces we began to measure out the joint.

Then after that we used a tool called the tri square to make sure our lines where we're going to cut is straight. Then after that we used another tool which was a chisel so after we cut out the lines with a saw we were using a saw we used the chisel to scrape out the wood so we can put another wood in between the piece we cut.

I did a simple design which was very easy for me to complete the joint of my piece of wood. I enjoyed this week tech because I got to complete my joint and that mean I can add the hook to me design and after that mean I completed my whole design.

AFL With Rebecca & Aundrey

LI: To understand the way of how a specific sport works.

This week for sport we had AFL with Rebecca & Aundrey. First we were split up into our year groups which was year seven and eights. After then we recapped on what we learnt last time about AFL, then we had to get into partners and practice our throwing to our partner. To do this we had to do the pirate throw whenever we forget how to do the throw. I enjoyed learning a new sport because maybe I want to continue to play the sport and I know already how some of the games works.

Culture Food Collage

LI: To practice searching for smart images and create a cultural collage.

This week, our task for Inquiry was to create a cultural photo collage using the new smart image searching skills we learnt last week.

First, we were given four different choices relating to cultural differences to base our collage off of. The choices were: cultural food, music, language or countries. My partner and I chose to create a collage of cultural foods.

We used our smart image searching skills and searched for cultural images with creative common license.

In our collage, we started by thinking about the different countries and the foods we should include. The cultural foods we included were: Mexican, Indian, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Malaysian and African food.

I enjoyed this activity very much and creating this cultural food collage. I was able to practice smart searching for images and experimenting with the creative common license function on google.

America's Cup

LI: To use our reading strategies and smart searching skills to find out about the America's Cup.

Today, LS2 and LS1 worked together to complete a research and comprehension task. The information we found out was around the history of the America’s Cup yacht race.

We started the task by discussing what we already know about the America’s Cup in our groups. Each group had a mix of LS2 and LS1 students. We wrote down what we already knew in bullet-point notes using pieces of paper. Then as a class, we read an article giving helpful information about the America’s Cup. We continued to write notes on what pieces of information we didn’t know.

After this, we used our notes and wrote down 20 keywords relating to the America’s Cup. We used our notes to find these keywords. We then choose 6 of the most important keywords from the list. Using those 6 keywords, we wrote a paragraph summary giving detailed information about the events and history on the America’s Cup yacht races.

We really enjoyed this activity because it allowed us to learn more about a new topic and we were able to practice sharing our prior knowledge as well as making and using our notes.

Tech Refletion

This week was our second week of tech since we got back from lockdown. We were with Mr Grundy doing hard material. Our goal for today was to chose our design were making and then we had to make the plan showing our design was able to be made. I chose a jewellery tree which was quiet hard and tricky to measure at the same time. After we chose our design we had to measure it out with an piece of wood we were given by Mr Grundy. Making the measurements were quiet hard because the wood was quite fiddly and I sometimes got the measurements wrong.

Mr Grundy had a way of getting to people who needed his help in order. We will write our names and then when he was free he would look up at the board and call out the names that were on the board and help that person in order so everyone got a turn at getting help. Next week we will start on carving our wood in to the two piece of wood we need to start our plan we made. All the wooden toys Mr Grundy has was made by his students and by himself. I have fun because I got to experience who to make toys.

This week our group did reciprocal reading. The text we read was Puaki. The text was informing us about the importance and the stories behind a Ta-Moko. In the text there were four origins of four people explaining how and why they got their ta-moko. In our reciprocal reading each person of the group was assigned a role, a clarifier, A questionnaire, A predictor, a summariser and the leader. When each page was read each person would do their role (e.g: predictor predicts next page). While doing this we were tasked at creating HOT (Higher Order Thinking) Questions part of the text.

PB4L - Positive Behaviour For Learning

LI: To tell people why it's important to ask for permission when leaving the room

When we need to leave the classroom we must ask for  permission so the teachers know where you are or where you going to be. For this task we had to create a DLO about why we need permission to leave the room for whatever reason. Having permission for leaving the classroom is always needed because you never know if their going to be an emergency, and if their is and the teachers don't know where you are they are risking their lives looking for you and making sure you back and that your safe.

LI: To show other how to do your learning faster with shortcuts
For this week cybersmart challenge we were asked to create a DLO showing tips you can use while your doing you learning, it can also help you by making it much easier to learn when you only have little time in you hand to complete a certain task. I did four tips and shortcuts that can make you learning much faster and better for you when your learning. These four tips can help you when you writing and when you making DLO, or poster. I liked that I got to create a DLO showing our year 4s and 5s how to use their chromebooks whne their learning.

Number Bank

LI: To gain a more in depth understanding about mathematics.
For today maths challenge we had to fill in a google doc about the biggest and the smallest six digit number. We had six number already picked for us and then we had to make the biggest and the smallest number out of those six that were chosen for us. I used all six number in each coloum that have to be filled out. I found this task very enjoyable because I got to refresh my mind and placing number in the correct coloum, and it was also like doing the palce number.

Panda Research

L.I:  To use our smart searching skills to find information about the giant panda

One of our activity for this week was to do some research on pandas. We created explanation using the acronym TEEL. Before making the DLO we made notes to record the information we were gathering. We bullet pointed our fact and information so it will be easy to create our paragraphs. TEEL helped us write our paragraphs in order and in correct places. The paragraphs we wrote down was based on the information we gathered using our smart searching skills. Fun fact about pandas are that like most bear they do not hibernate because they cannot stop eating, and pandas diet involve about 99% of bamboo. They also eat up to 26 to 84 pounds in a normal day.

Sporcle Challenge

LI: To do more quizzes on a new app
This week our teacher found this very cool app that we can do quizzes on. Our task was to play this app and then make a DLO about it, say what it is and what I enjoyed about this app. I think when I was doing my quiz I got most of the answers wrong but that was alright because it made me more determined to get more answer right then I did before.

Outside The Box Art

LI: To create an outside of the box art.
For this task our teachers made lockdown fun while we were doing our learning. This task was all about creating a piece of art but do something outside box. This outside the box task was really fun to make because I thought this art was really outside the box. To start of my art their was a wavy line to start my drawing. I thought for a little while thinking out what I should do. Then I thought that it the wavy line could be turned into lips then maybe my art could be a face with the lip for my outside idea. I thought this task was very interesting because I thought outside the box and made an piece of art that was very fun and enjoyable to make.
