Summer Learning Journey l Poetry Slam - 2

This Week I completed week 2 task 1 of the Summer Learning Journey. I decided to do both of the task for today. I did the Kick Start and the Step It Up Challenge of the Poetry Slam task for today.

This poetry slam was a bit different from the previous one because we were making a poet using kennings. Kennigns describe what a person, idea, or object is or does. Each line has a simple phrase either a nount + a noun or a noun + a verb. They work like riddles you have to try and figure out what the poet is talking about or what it is descibing.

The Kick Start challenges asked the partipants to write a poet using kennigns to describe a animal that reminds you of summer. I chose my cat Tigress because he loves to sit in the sun and just relaxe and loves to sleep in the summer just like me and my cousins.

The Step It Up challenge was to make a another poem but we had to write it about summer. We first looked at a poem but written about winter but we were writing ours about summer. I had fun doing this task because I reminded me how fun summer is.

Summer Learning Journey l Vector Art

Today i have completed week 1 task 5 for the summer learning journey. This task was about creating vector art. I decided to do the step it up challege so I can challeneg myself more. This task required me to draw my hero ( someone who inspries me ) and to use one of their quotes to create a DLO.

The person I chose was Nelson Madela. Nelson Madela was presented the noble peace award in 1993 for peacefully destorying the araptheid against others and he was fight for equality for all those different colors.

To create a really good piece of vector art start with the basic and easy shapes of what you are trying to recreate and then try to draw as much detail as you can to make it look realistic as possible.

I enjoyed this task because I got to show others who inspire me and why they inspire me.

Y Chart

LI: to make inferences about the events in the text using clues provided by the author.

Our focus was based around inferring what athletes were thinking, seeing and wondering during the Olympics. In order to do this, we looked at an image which had information that we could point out to form our inferences. By looking at the images, we could see that the athletes had completed the swimming and are taking an after photo. Some inferences we made for feel/see were: the athletes might have felt nervous and cold, they could have been proud of what they accomplished, seeing their names of the scoreboard and how they felt determined to win.

The image shown on the DLO was of Violet Walrond and other athlete competitors. Violet Walrond was a young athlete who competed in the Olympics at the age of fifteen. She was the youngest and first ever swimmer in New Zealand to use the crawl technique. Violet also was the first female to compete in the Olympics, representing New Zealand.

SUPER FINGERS Competition

LI: To recall our timetable quickly.

Today for maths we have recalled our multiplication knowledge by playing a game called Super Fingers. This is a game to see how well and how fast you can answer questions, by using dice.

The instructions of this game is that we need to write a phrase on a white board or piece of paper. Then you will need to roll 2 dice which we will multiply by, and the first person to call out the answer will take one of the letters out. The first person to have all of the letters rubbed out will win the game

The process we did it in was similar to a netball game, draw, quarter finals, semi finals, and lastly finals. To run this competition smoothly we created a bracket which showed who will versus who. Our bracket was now even so later in the game we did a wild card who were Vayan and Micah.

In pairs we challenged each other to see who was faster at answering the questions. The winner would go against the winner from another person. Whoever wins goes up against another winner, and it will keep going until there are two people left, which would be the finals.

The two people facing each other in the finals were Afatia and Chris.
I enjoyed this game very much becasue I got to learn my time tables faster.

Afatia was the winner of the finals.

Provocation

LI: To use provocation to understand both sides of a story.

Our focus this week for reading was based on the Olympics & provocation. We used provocation to understand both side of the question asked. The question was should host countries spend so much money on building the Olympic venues? Our opinion was that host countries should not spend a massive amount of money on the olympics, since the former buildings used to host the olympics. We think that the billions of dollars used to other countries are facing difficult times. I found this task interesting because seeing both side of the story meant different people see the story with different opinion.

Olympic Math Challenge 1

LI: To find the most efficient strategy when trying to solve a question.

This week for maths, our learning was based on the Olympics. Our first challenge was about Michael Phelps. The question was, on average, every swim stroke Michael Phelps takes gets him 2 meters down the pool. Michael competed in 8 separate events during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, It meant that we had to find out how many meters Michael swam for his  gold medals. In total Michael swam 1500m in all eight events. When it says that every stroke Michael takes he ends up to meters down the pool. If he swims two meters in one storke that means 1500 neededs to be divided by 2. The answer is 750, which means Michael Phelps did 750 storkes to get to the 1,500m range.

When you find the four very important ideas we found the three vital idean from the four very important ideas. I found this task fun because when you find main ideans from the text that means that you understand the text throughly.

Venn Diagram

LI: To find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and text of “ The Beginning "

This week for reading we have been focusing on the differences of two types of ways a story can be said. This week we were finding differences and similarities from the video and text from "the Begining". This text was about our group finding things that are different and simaler bewtweeen the too. In the video verison it shows the seperation of mother earth and father sky, and in the written version it's explain the love for the two. I enjoyed this task because I got to see the differneces and similaritites bewtween two storys.

Summarising

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. We used the summarising DLO to help us write what we think happeneds in the in the story is true. First we needed to find 20 inportant words from the story, then we had to find the 6 most important words from the 20 important words. After doing that we used those six words to make a short story about the story. I found this task intersting because I got to summarise a story in fewer words, meaning I understand what they story is about.

Finacial Capabilities

LI: To understand the budget is a plan for managing money

This week for maths we have been focusing on our times tables. Using this learning we have done a financial capability challenge which will improve our multiplying skills, and solving it quicker. In this DLO we have picked one question to show our strategies when we are solving maths questions. I enjoyed this task because I got to get the answer more quicker when doing times tables.

Shoe Narrative

LI: To use the 5 senses and personafication to help us paint a picture with words.

Today for writing we have been recapping about how to write a good narrative. A narrative is a made up story that people tell. With a partner we planned what the story was going to be about, and use that idea to write a good narrative. The structure of the narrative is TOPES (Title, Orientation, Problem, Explain, Solution, and Mora/Coda). Something I found interesting was that it is better to plan instead of just writing a narrative because you can look at the notes for a guide.
